4 Duncan Street

Nos 1-5 Duncan Street were built in the early 1820s, as shown in an 1826 map of Newington. Later houses on the North side of Duncan Street appear to have been completed soon after, but the end of the terrace was never completed.

The corner site (49 Upper Gray Street) was in use as a commercial garage (Mercury Motors) during at least 1949-52 but is now something of an eyesore.

Immediately opposite 4 Duncan Street is the former Edinburgh Geographical Institute
