PLAN of the LANDS of NEWINGTON and BELLEVILLE 1826

This map may have been an advertisement for the attractions for the then garden suburb of Newington.

Villas were first built along Minto Street, Salisbury Place and Salisbury Road in the early 1800s (highlighted in yellow). Due to their ideal situation on one of the main routes into the centre of Edinburgh, many of these are now hotels and guest houses but a few remain as private homes.

By the 1820s, there were villas and terraced houses in parts of Gray Street, Duncan Street and Middleby Street (highlighted in green). Some of the early villas were demolished for industrial development in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The area now known as the '5 streets' of the Blacket Association (marked in red) was in 1826 still ripe for development. It remains an essentially residential and highly desirable area.
